2023 Education Policy Agenda Update
Patrice Relerford, our Senior Director of Impact and Collective Giving, recently talked with Kenneth Eban of the Advancing Equity Coalition about the status of the 2023 Plan for Student Success as the legislative session enters its final months.
Advancing Equity Coalition is a collective of community partners who have come together this session to advocate for investments and policy changes that will help ensure our schools are well-resourced, representative, and welcoming spaces for all students.
Our Foundation is proud to support community-driven and shaped solutions and use tools beyond grantmaking, such as advocacy and public awareness, to elevate AEC's priorities which include paying off the debt owed to our students, investing in a diverse teacher workforce, and disrupting the school-to-prison pipeline.
A significant part of the discussion focused on teacher diversity and the proposed changes to our state's tiered teacher licensure system. The proposed changes would eliminate the tier 2 licensure pathway for future teachers, which could have a significant impact on Minneapolis Public Schools. The Minneapolis school district has more than 180 teachers on a Tier 2 license, with more than 50 working in special education. Half of the Minneapolis school district's tier 2 teachers are people of color.
